Ian Haines has been performing since he was very young. He started out on drums, soon migrated to the cello, then picked up the bass, and finally fell in love with the banjo and dropped the rest. A junior at Boston Latin School, Ian is a bit of an eclectic, performing in a variety of musical genres, including jazz, classical, and progressive roots.

He performed with the Boston Pops during last year’s YAC Finale Concert as a member of Copley Place. “It certainly was one of my most memorable moments as a musician,” Ian recalls. “I enjoyed my experience so much last year, that I wanted to do it again!” This year, Ian will perform alongside his friends in Apollo and Suns. He is continually inspired by his friends and fellow musicians. “They open up new doors,” he states, “and show me new worlds of innovative music.”

Edsuvani Maisonet, a senior at Boston Latin School, started playing guitar in the fifth grade. However, it was not until two summers ago, while participating in Berklee’s Five-Week Program, when her playing vaulted to a new level. Performing with different ensembles in different styles for an eager audience was exciting for Edsuvani.

“Studying music and performing offers a completeness to my character and life that would not be there were I not a musician,” Edsuvani considers. “Music is necessary for me to challenge myself and make sure I keep growing.” Edsuvani will have the chance to challenge herself and grow even further when Apollo and Suns perform at Symphony Hall in June, an experience she eagerly anticipates. “My biggest accomplishment has been being a part of this competition,” Edsuvani states. “It is such a great opportunity to perform with the Pops – it will be pretty special!”

Mathilde Montpetit has been performing since she was four years old, almost exclusively in the realm of classical music. She finds performing in an ensemble preferable to performing solo. “I really love playing in groups,” states Mathilde, now a senior at Boston Latin School. “I’m able to lose myself in the collaboration with my fellow players.”

“The Boston Pops have been a part of my consciousness for as long as I can remember,” recalls Mathilde. “Performing with them is a huge honor.” A few years ago, Mathilde performed at the Junior Greenwood Music Camp. “During the performance, I felt so on top of the world that I don’t even remember if I made any mistakes,” she relates. “I think that was one of the first times in my life I actually enjoyed performing. Performing on stage makes me feel like I’m going to die (in the best way possible).”

Warren Thompson has been performing on soprano saxophone for two years, alto sax for six years, and flute for ten years. A senior at Boston Latin School, Warren has performed with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, for the 2009 All-State Conference, and at Berklee College of Music.

An avid fan of the Boston Pops, Warren is excited for many reasons to perform with the orchestra he has heard so many times before. “I love the opportunities to play and interact with other musicians and the bond we can share through music,” he says. Warren plans on playing and studying music after graduation, double majoring in music and science. With the ultimate goal of becoming a doctor, Warren looks forward to simultaneously pursuing performance and teaching. “Performing on stage makes me feel,” he considers, “exhilarated, emotional, connected with other musicians, and alive!”

Matt Pitts started playing upright bass ten years ago. Originally wanting to learn guitar, he eventually latched onto the bass. “I have really found how I identify with music,” he considers, “as a language. My instrument doesn't matter, because as long as I get to converse with someone else, I'm growing as a musician, and doing something that pleases me to no end.”

A junior at Boston Latin School, Matt has been performing now for five years and is looking forward to musically conversing with the Boston Pops in June. “I want to play with the Pops mainly so that I can play with musicians who have a lot more wisdom and experience than I do,” he says. Matt intends to study music in college, en route to becoming a professional musician. “Performing on stage makes me feel,” he considers, “I'm where I belong.”

When Elideusa Gomes-Almeida was just three months old, she underwent surgery for a diaphragmatic hernia. The results of the surgery were bittersweet. The surgery repaired Elideusa’s diaphragm, but left it considerably weakened. Additionally, Elideusa suffered from trauma and anxiety after surgery, making her extremely “shy and timid.”

Until recently, Elideusa spent the previous seven years singing without vocal training. It was a difficult process when she began to build her upper register, as she could not push from the diaphragm as her teachers recommended. Now a junior at Boston Arts Academy, Elideusa sees her vocal range continue to expand through hard work in private lessons. After graduating, Elideusa plans to attend a music conservatory and major in vocal performance and composition. “My favorite part of performing is connecting with the audience. Performing on stage makes me feel like I’m flying,” she exclaims. “Shy and timid” she is no longer.

Gregory Groover Jr. started playing saxophone in the fifth grade. He began performing soon after, joining the Berklee City Music program. Now a senior at Boston Arts Academy, Gregory performed at the YAC Finale Concert in 2010, for the prestigious TED Conference in Long Beach, and for the past year at the historic Wally’s Jazz Café.

A two-time YAC winner, Gregory looks forward to performing with the Boston Pops again in June. “There are so many amazing musicians that make up that orchestra,” he considers, “and I feel that it would be an honor to the play on the same stage.” Gregory will attend Berklee following graduation, to study music education and performance on his way to a music career. “My favorite thing about being a musician,” he says, “is that there is always something new to learn.”

Nicolas J. Perez Jr. is a senior at Boston Arts Academy, but did not start performing until his freshman year. In just a short time he has won the “Most Outstanding Musician” Award at the Berklee High School Jazz Festival and performed with the Boston Pops during last year’s YAC Finale Concert. “It is an experience that will be part of me for the rest of my life,” he recalls.

After graduation, Nicolas plans on attending Berklee to continue performing jazz and Latin styles, majoring in contemporary music and production, and also in music education. “As a musician and performer I have learned that it’s okay to be outside the box,” Nicolas believes, “many times, being different is necessary so music can evolve. I enjoy the fact that there is always something new to learn when it comes to studying music and performing. Music always leaves you wanting more.”

Josue Raymond has been performing for six years, in church performances and in conventions throughout Boston and New York. A senior at Boston Arts Academy, Josue attends the Berklee Five-Week Program each summer. This affords him the opportunity to perform in the Berklee Performance Center – an experience he calls “always a great feeling!” It is not surprising then, that Josue will attend Berklee after graduation.

Josue is fascinated with the legendary performances of Michael Jackson. “The energy he brings to the stage is incredible,” enthuses Josue, “as a drummer I try to bring excitement to my performances at all times.” Josue will relish his next opportunity, performing at Symphony Hall with the Boston Pops as a member of the Charlie Brown Blues Band. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play with the Pops,” exudes Josue, “I’m so excited about sharing the stage with them!”

Max Ridley started playing electric bass because he wanted to be just like Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Soon though, he found himself on the upright bass playing jazz, bluegrass, folk, funk, rock, and neo-soul. The eclectic mix of styles really does not matter to Max. “I enjoy the feeling and sense of fulfillment I get when I make music with other people,” he says.

Max is excited for his third consecutive year as a YAC winner. “Performing with the Boston Pops has felt almost unreal,” he recounts, “because it was life-changing, and to have that experience again would be incredible!” A senior at Boston Arts Academy, Max plans for a career in music. He will attend Berklee in the fall to study jazz performance and music education. “Performing on stage makes me feel,” he considers, “like it was what I was put on this earth to do.”

Phuong Nghi Pham was four years old when her parents bought her a little music book with a keyboard attached to it. The flashing keys and simple melodies sparked her interest. Soon Phuong moved from the keyboard to the piano, on which she has been performing for the past nine years.

“One of my most valuable learning experiences was performing on From the Top with two fellow musicians,” Phuong recalls from her performance on the NPR radio program. A freshman at Boston Latin School, Phuong passes by Symphony Hall every day, but has yet to see the Boston Pops perform. Now she is suddenly poised for an extraordinary experience. “Taking part in this competition has given me more than I wanted,” she enthuses, “to share the stage with the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall! I feel extremely honored!”
