Welcome to New York City.

In 2006, Fidelity FutureStage started its Theater Program with 10 New York City schools. Every year, over 600 students participate in the program, receiving a rare introduction to the world of Broadway theater.

2010 FutureStage Finale at Broadway's Imperial Theatre

On June 14, 2010, six student plays made their inaugural performance at the Imperial Theatre in New York City. Five plays were chosen from the 2009-2010 Fidelity FutureStage program and one* was selected as part of the citywide Fidelity FutureStage® Playwriting Contest.

Two-time Academy Award® Winner Hilary Swank served as the honorary host of the Finale.

Broadway luminaries visit with Fidelity FutureStage schools

Throughout the school year, students involved with the Fidelity FutureStage theater program are treated to special visits with Broadway professionals and celebrities. The guest artists share their experiences and craft with the students in the classroom and on field trips to the theater.

NYC students honored at 2010 Drama League Awards

As part of this year's theater industry awards season, our Fidelity FutureStage student playwrights were honored at the 2010 Drama League Awards in New York City. As part of the event, they walked the red carpet, met hosts Vanessa Williams and Michael Urie (Ugly Betty) and a number of other stage and screen stars, and were recognized during the awards ceremony. Young playwrights audition for Fidelity FutureStage Broadway Finale

On May 12^th at Shetler Studios, Fidelity FutureStage students had a true Broadway experience, participating in theater games, workshops, seminars and auditioning their plays to be selected to make their Broadway debut June 15^th at the Imperial Theatre. See photos below for the five winning plays.

Workshops were led by members from Tony Award nominated Billy Elliot the Musical including David Alvarez (Billy), Tommy Batchelor (Billy), David Bologna (Michael), Frank Dolce (Michael), Aaron Kaburick (Ensemble), Tessa Netting (Ballet Girl) and Nora Brennan (youth casting director), Paul Canaan (actor, theater program education and Reality Show Judge from MTV’s Legally Blonde) and Carlos Encinias (Mamma Mia, Alter Boyz, Les Miz, Good Vibrations).

The judging panel for the audition included noted Broadway professionals Megan Larche (casting director: Grease, White Christmas, A Chorus Line), David Henry Hwang (Tony Award-winning playwright for M. Butterfly), Paul Canaan (actor, theater program educator and Reality Show Judge from MTV’s Legally Blonde), Michael Bush (Fidelity FutureStage Finale Director, Artistic Director of Emelin Theater), and Robert Ellman (theater education coordinator for the New York City Department of Education).

Fidelity, Elton John and Billy Elliot the Musical kick off playwriting contest

Fidelity FutureStage, the producers of Billy Elliot the Musical and Elton John announced the first ever Fidelity FutureStage Playwriting Contest – a unique opportunity for area high school students to become Broadway’s youngest playwrights.

Students are invited to write a 10-minute, one-act play reflecting one of the themes of Billy Elliot: fulfilling a dream, discovering a special talent or overcoming adversity. One student will win the opportunity to work directly with the Billy Elliot the Musical creative team to develop and produce their play. That play will be performed at the Imperial Theatre as part of the Fidelity FutureStage Finale on June 15, 2009.

On March 19, the three Billys, David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish surprised students from three New York City schools that have signed up to participate in the contest. To help inspire the aspiring playwrights, the young stars shared their personal experiences of being part of a Broadway show.

Fidelity FutureStage theater program underway

Over 600 students in 10 NYC schools have participated in the Fidelity FutureStage theater program where they have written their own plays, gone to Broadway performances, and visited with Broadway professionals and celebrities.

In February, one play was selected from each school for the opportunity to be performed on Broadway at the Fidelity FutureStage Finale at the Imperial Theater.

On May 12, students will audition their plays for a panel of judges who will choose the five plays to be included in the Finale.

NYC students make unprecedented debut on Broadway

Celebrities, NY press, Fidelity clients, employees, theater professionals and community leaders gathered for the second annual Fidelity FutureStage Finale at the New World Stages in New York City. Peter Gallagher, star of Broadway's The Country Girl was the honorary host.

Billy Elliot the Musical, based on the critically acclaimed feature film of 2000, is the new show that has captured Broadway’s heart and received the best reviews for any musical in years. Billy Elliot is a feel-good celebration of one boy following his heart and making his dreams come true. Billy Elliot is brought to life by the movie’s original creative team—director Stephen Daldry, choreographer Peter Darling, andwriter Lee Hall—with music legend Elton John, who wrote the score.

LEAP, a non-profit organization committed to improving the quality of public education through a hands-on arts-based approach to teaching, has been bringing professional artists together with underserved students in the New York metropolitan area for the past 30 years.

Viertel/Frankel/Baruch/Routh Group has produced and general managed a wide range of plays and musicals on and off Broadway, in London and on tour for the past 20 years, including Hairspray, Company and Young Frankenstein . Through Fidelity FutureStage they share professional talents and a love of Broadway theater to nurture a new generation of actors, playwrights and audiences.
